Through this course, students demonstrate effective leadership skills and project management skills as they work with faculty and/or clinical mentors in health or educational settings to develop a specified project. Students contribute to the development of the project through a variety of methods, including engaging in research or quality improvement, policy development or development of educational materials.


Collaboratively, with members of the interprofessional team, students work to support project goals across abroad range of healthcare service delivery models, including acute care, primary care, long-term care and community organizations. Dissemination of knowledge and project outcomes will occur at the conclusion of the project.

Expected outcomes and deliverables

Upon successful completion of this course, the student has reliably demonstrated the ability to:  

  1. collaborate with leaders in the healthcare or education sectors to plan, develop and implement an identified practice change, innovation or evaluation with specific deliverables;  
  2. synthesize current evidence and research to support and lead project planning and development;  
  3. employ effective group process and conflict management skills;  
  4. take responsibility for actively participating and seeking assistance as needed to complete project deliverables and report on outcomes and key learning;  
  5. communicate project findings in collaboration with peers and the organization.   




Students will be assessed on the following:


  • Development of a Project Charter
  • Bi-weekly progress logs
  • Research and Resource Report
  • Development of Project Outcomes

Requirements

Acceptable Capstone Projects

  • Address quality improvement, patient care, health care education, or evidence-based practice
  • Can be completed within ten weeks with measurable outcomes (i.e. recommendations or more tangible deliverables)
  • Allow students to work collaboratively with your organization (both remotely and onsite)
  • Offer a meaningful learning experience while providing benefits to your organization
  • Projects or deliverables that can be completed within 10 weeks (approximately 42 hours of student time)


Examples of Acceptable Projects:

  • Developing an educational resource for patients, caregivers, or staff
  • Preparing recommendations on a health care related issue
  • Designing a workflow improvement plan for a specific unit or department
  • Analyzing patient satisfaction data to propose quality improvement measures
  • Exploring technology integration in nursing practice


Examples of Not Acceptable Projects:

  • Large-scale policy changes requiring extensive approval processes
  • Research requiring ethics board approval
  • Implementation of long-term clinical trials
  • Complex organizational restructuring projects
