business consulting data analysisLife Cycle Assessment (LCA) evaluates the environmental aspects and potential impacts throughout a product’s life (i.e. cradle to grave) from raw material acquisition through production, use and disposal. Environmental impacts considered include resource use, human health, and ecological consequences. Students develop LCA in line with ISO14040 standard. Example products could include household appliances, furniture, vehicles, bicycles, electronic devices, buildings and infrastructure.
Students
Companies receive a lifecycle assessment in line with ISO14040 standard.
There are 3 possible deliverables. Firstly companies could receive an expert analysis of the complete environmental impact of a product. This can help the company achieve sustainability goals as well as provide marketing collateral for attracting further business.
Secondly, this type of analysis can form the basis of a review of manufacturing processes to improve efficiency and quality of manufacturing.
Thirdly in increasingly regulatory environments, the ISO standard is required for environmental product declarations, allowing independent evidence of product compliance.
The deliverables are of a high-level report that includes goal, scope reflecting initial project meeting, data sets used; and tables and charts indicating impact, including for alternative scenarios.

Requirements
In this course, students learn how to protect, restore and create engineered and natural systems that are socially, environmentally, and economically sustainable. With climate change a matter of national and international importance, a demand has arisen for engineers able to conceive and develop sustainable systems. The consumption of natural resources and energy in areas such as transport, building, and other areas are part of this need. Sustainable systems engineering brings together the new technologies and innovative engineering approaches needed for sustainable global development. As part of this program students undertake a broad range of studies, graduating will the skills to design engineering solutions which meet the needs of society within economic and ecological constraints. The student’s studies focus on the development of a sustainable systems approach, combining the fundamentals of engineering sciences, mathematics and engineering design. Program specializations exist in energy, or transport and logistics. Staff and students are based in Melbourne Australia and are hoping to work with a company online to help deliver a solution.
Students will develop a report and provide data for the purpose of marketing, product or process improvement or to meet regulatory needs.
LCA can assist in:
• identifying opportunities to improve the environmental aspects of products at various points in their life cycle
• decision-making in industry, governmental or non-governmental organizations (e.g. strategic planning, priority setting, product or process design or redesign)
• selection of relevant indicators of environmental performance, including measurement techniques
• marketing (e.g. an environmental claim, eco-labelling scheme or environmental product declaration).
