Coming out of this course, students should be able to:
- Articulate the goals of their internship, including achivements, and knowledge and skills they hope to obtain.
- Understand the connection between their internship and their academic experience.
- Apply material from the classroom to a real-world internship project.
- Evaluate their own progress towards achieving the goals in (1).
- Meet the expectations of a real-world internship, including regular work attendance and timely production of expected work volume of their supervisor.
- Take initiative on assignments and offer effective solutions with attention to detail.
- Communicate effectively, verbally, in writing, and interpersonally.
Prior to Enrollment
1. Learning Goals Agreement. The student must work with their supervisor to complete a Learning Goals Agreement. This assignment will outline what the student intends to learn and accomplish during their internship, and represents an agreement with their supervisor built on mutual intentions and expectations for the internship, both educational and work-related. It also outlines specific strategies for achieving their goals and how progress will be evaluated.

2. Application for Internship Credit. As of this date, the current template is here: https://careerpath.cis.fiu.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2021/04/02_InternshipApplication_v02_MAF.pdf. Each of the items on the following checklist must be provided and the document must be signed and dated by the student and supervisor. Any unpaid internship must be accompanied by a description of the training and mentoring experiences given to the student.
Credits are approved at the following rate, assuming the internship extends for the entire applicable semester: (10 hours per week=1 credit, 20 hours per week=2 credits, 25 or more hours per week = 3 credits). Credit for internships that do not extend for the entire semester will be prorated based on the number of weeks and hours.
Assignments
1. Internship Evaluation by Supervisor. Completed towards the end of the semester, the supervisor provides a collective evaluation of student performance throughout the internship, including progress and future suggestions for the intern. 2. Internship Evaluation by Student. Completed towards the end of the semester, the student provides a collective evaluation of their own performance throughout the internship, including their own progress, whether or not the internship met their expectations, and whether they would recommend the internship for future students. 3. Internship Summary Report. Completed towards the end of the semester, the student provides a summary of their internship experience. All of the following must be present to pass:
a. Cover page that includes name, company name, date, and internship title
b. Updated copy of their resume
c. An introduction that identifies the company name, mission, major products, and organizational structure.
d. A job description that explains the specific duties assigned, and the products the student helped create.
e. A copy of the signed Learning Goals Agreement
f. A description of all FIU courses related to the internship, and how they helped prepare the student
g. A conclusion that describes how the organization met their learning goals, and helped clarify their career goals
h. Copies of (1) and (2).
