planning educational materials influencing skills odor control acute care decision making research procurementHospital environments are highly sensitive to sensory factors, with odors having a notable impact on patient and staff experience. This project will explore how odor control strategies, compliant with Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) guidelines, can be effectively introduced into inpatient units at RVH. The student will work closely with hospital teams to research odor control technologies, engage in stakeholder discussions, and develop planning and educational materials. The project includes a literature review, equipment scan, and consultation with Environmental Services, IPAC, and Procurement. The student will assist in gathering vendor data, drafting initial guidelines, and producing educational content for staff. While not involved in procurement or decision-making, the student will contribute to laying the groundwork for future implementation.
The anticipated outcome is a deeper understanding of how environmental odors influence care settings and identification of IPAC-compliant solutions suitable for hospital use. The student will help raise awareness about odor control’s role in patient-centered care. Deliverables will include a literature review summarizing best practices, a comparative scan of odor control technologies, draft usage guidelines, and educational handouts to support staff engagement. A comprehensive final report and presentation will summarize all project phases, findings, and future recommendations.
4. Student Involvement
The student will play an active, supervised role throughout the project. Responsibilities include conducting research on odor control practices, analyzing product data and compliance standards, and consulting with hospital teams to explore implementation feasibility. The student will also create draft protocols and educational materials and compile a final report and presentation to communicate results and reflections on the experience.
5. Resources Required
To ensure successful completion, the student will need mentorship from a designated preceptor, along with access to relevant hospital staff including IPAC, Procurement, and Environmental Services. They will require permission to review applicable policies, workspace with computer and internet access, and supervised contact with vendors to collect information. Support for printing and scheduling meetings will also be required, along with access to templates for drafting materials.
6. Support Offered to the Student
The student will be supported by a preceptor who will provide regular guidance and feedback. They will be introduced to interdisciplinary stakeholders and oriented to relevant hospital systems and privacy standards. A workstation and necessary technology will be made available. Additionally, the student will receive coaching on how to structure professional reports, develop presentations, and build their project planning and communication skills. Progress will be regularly reviewed, and constructive feedback will be provided throughout.
