A Miami-based InsureTech startup focused on the evolution and optimization of personal risk measurement, communication, judgment and decision-making.

Safe-esteem is a technology startup led by risk intelligence, mitigation, and JDM industry leaders building the world's first Personal Safety Barometer - a mobile app that can quantify personal risk & safety in real-time, empowering people across the globe to make smarter, safer decisions in everyday life. Our app combines human and Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, analytics, and cognitive-behavioral science insights to generate highly personalized risk scores across the domains health, accidents, and crime, providing meaningful and relevant awareness and decision-support information to end-users and their families.

We have already developed and released a free consumer app (https://safe-xplore.com ), and a commercial application (https://www.safe-esteem.com/xplore ) focused on the Travel Risk Rating and Intelligence sector.

I really enjoyed working with Safe-Esteem and Filippo Marino CEO. The project primarily focused on data collection, cleaning, and validation, so as someone focusing on a career in data analytics it was the perfect fit for my skillset. I also appreciated that Filippo took the time to really explain the company’s mission and goals, and how our project would fit into the bigger picture. It never felt like I was just plugging away at a spreadsheet, and I enjoyed the research related to the data collection. It was nice to expand my horizons and learn about new countries, how they are impacted by crime, what their policing systems and governments are like, and how current events shape criminal activity. I would agree with the company’s description, that having an interest and some skill in foreign languages can be really beneficial for this project, as you are often exploring data/news sources in other languages. Aside from the project itself, Filippo was wonderful to work with and made himself readily available to provide guidance and support. I would highly recommend Safe-Esteem to anyone considering interning with them!

Filippo Marino/safe-esteem.com was a very interesting project to work on and Filippo was very helpful, patient, and instructive. This project wasn't in my field [Cybersecurity] and I felt that I lacked the experience/skills necessary to have been more effective. However, I still appreciated the exposure and lessons learned about my own growth opportunities. I am grateful for Filippo's guidance and my teammate's peer leadership. I think is an excellent project for data analytics students, business majors, etc. For anyone outside those fields, this may be a bit challenging. If future students come from outside data analytics, I would recommend a bit more of a tutorial, glossary of terms, and some job aides for spreadsheet/calculations. I also think that a software development major could be of great benefit to Filippo/Safe-esteem as a simple Python script could be written to ask questions of student researchers [then the student's experience/major would not matter.] The answers could be scripted to dump into a spreadsheet-ready form or even directly into the Google Sheets, Excel, or other spreadsheet format. This would remove a lot of the possibility for human error in data entry/calculation. Also, the script is faster to review for errors vs individual spreadsheets. The Python scripting could also be programmed to complete the number/rate highs & lows, thereby further reducing the human error element and making review quicker. Additionally, it would make it easier to transfer research data/calculations into Safe-esteem's app software. This could considerably reduce costs and time for Safe-esteem and would be an excellent project for general computer science/software development student. So it result in very big wins all around.
