Housing Education

The goal of our project is to develop educational and outreach materials to educate youth about housing -- housing rights and responsibilities, finding housing, understanding housing options. Our goal is to empower young people around housing.

Community Garden Expansion at Non-Profit Housing

York Non-Profit Housing Society is a non-profit housing provider to students at York University and Seneca College. We have a community garden that we have secured funding to expand. The community garden grows food that is provided to community groups and persons in need. The project is being overseen by a professor at York University. The project team, over a week, will design, procure the materials and lead the build of the new community garden beds and installation a new rain-barrel watering system. Volunteers from the housing co-operative and the local community will also be on hand to assist with the build. The goal would be to successfully complete the project in an efficient and cost-effective manner. Activities include identifying suppliers and contractors, designing the layout/location of the above activities, creating a timeline and work plan to implement the activities, and implementing the build - this team will work with the professor to implement the plan. Students in the field of Landscape Design, Biology, Engineering, Design and Environmental Studies would be ideal for this project, but all are welcome to apply.

We would like to make our housing co-operative more environmentally friendly. We have secured funding for a number of activities: greenhouse, community garden, solar panel and EV installation and improving the energy efficiency of the building. The project is being overseen by a Professor at York University. An implementation plan was established -- this would include identifying suppliers and contractors, designing the layout/location of the above activities, and creating a timeline and work plan to implement the activities - this team will work with the professor to implement the plan. This project would help reduce the carbon footprint of our building. We would like Engineering, Design and Environmental Studies students to develop an implement the sustainability plan in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
