strategic communications sales & marketing business strategy marketing strategyLooking to elevate your organization, and bring it to the next level? Bring on students from Northern Michigan University to be your student-consultants, in a project-based experience. Students will work on one main project over the course of the semester, connecting with you as needed with virtual communication tools.
This is a 300-level course in which the students learn how to identify a "lead" customer. This is not granular work. We will identify the lead customer, describe what that person looks like, and then write a short marketing plan on how to reach that person, what the positioning of the product is, and how to message the product to the customer. This is for the early start-up stage of product marketing.
The company will be able to identify to whom to sell the product first and then how to position it so that it is easily described and understood. There will be a marketing plan that briefly discusses the market and the industry.
Deliverables are negotiable, and will seek to align the needs of the students and the organization.
A final project deliverable might include:
- A marketing plan that includes a look at the industry, the market(s), the positioning of the product, the messaging of the product, a psychographic of the customer, and a strategy for reaching them. They will understand the marketplace and be able to identify the specific arena the business/owner should begin to sell/market.

Project Examples
Students in groups of 2-3 will work with your company to identify your needs and provide actionable recommendations, based on their in-depth research and analysis.
Students will work on projects that have anything start-up or early stage into the marketplace. As examples, they have worked on a particle separator, a snowshoe company, a start-up reclaimed fruit process, a fundraiser for a museum, a confectionary store, a prototype for a wheelchair product, a non-profit that grows food locally, and a prototype for a medical device company. We teach effectuation which is inventing a product and then finding the right market for it. This isn't vocational, granular work. This is start-up work.
Companies must answer the following questions to submit a match request to this experience:
Be available for a quick phone/virtual call with the instructor to initiate your relationship and confirm your scope is an appropriate fit for the course.
Provide a dedicated contact person who is available for weekly/bi-weekly drop-ins to address students’ questions as well as periodic messages over the duration of the project.
Provide an opportunity for students to present their work and receive feedback.
How is your project relevant to the course?
Provide relevant information/data as needed for the project.
