In the Business Solutions Lab, learners leverage their acquired skills to tackle real-world challenges faced by industry and community partners. Participants are equipped to conduct applied research, engage in critical reflection, and communicate effectively to deliver practical, evidence-based solutions. This experience allows learners to synthesize and evaluate information, demonstrating professional judgment and communication skills in a general business environment. By engaging with these projects, companies can benefit from fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to non-critical challenges.

Product Lifecycle & Obsolescence Analysis for August Electronics
Students will: Receive and analyze datasets (usage history, part numbers, manufacturer details). Research lifecycle status using manufacturer websites, databases, and tools. Flag risks (end-of-life, long lead times, limited stock). Suggest viable alternatives or replacements. Deliver findings in a structured report (e.g., Power BI dashboard, inventory analysis).

Justice Studies Applied Research Project

This experience is designed to leverage learners' skills in research, report writing, communication, and critical thinking to tackle real-world legal challenges. Participants will apply their knowledge of conflict resolution, crisis de-escalation, and justice system principles to analyze complex legal issues and make informed decisions. By engaging with industry professionals, learners will gain practical insights and contribute to projects that require systematic evaluation of evidence and strategic problem-solving.

SCMT2998: Strategic Supply Chain Solutions (Capstone projects)
This experience is designed for learners in a capstone course focused on Business Administration with a specialization in Supply Chain Management. The Capstone Project is the culminating experience of the program. Working in teams, students engage with partner organizations to tackle real business problems. They apply tools and frameworks learned across 20 specialized courses to deliver: End-to-end supply chain analysis Process improvement recommendations grounded in Lean, Six Sigma, and quality management Data-backed decision-making using Excel, Power BI, and other digital tools Interactive dashboards and visual reporting to support operational transparency Full project documentation and a professional client presentation

Healthcare Innovation Projects in Alberta

Participants will collaborate with Alberta or Canada-based clinics to enhance operational efficiency, patient care, or service delivery. Learners will leverage their skills in project management, data analysis, and healthcare systems to develop practical solutions that address specific challenges faced by clinics. This hands-on experience aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, preparing learners to make meaningful contributions to the healthcare sector.

HMSV3996: Community and Health Leadership Applied Research Project

The Health and Human Services Management Post-Diploma Certificate program builds upon the student’s expertise from their health or human services diploma or degree and prepares them for leadership roles within an organization. Students from this program take business courses along with discipline-specific electives in preparation for leading and managing in the complex landscape of the helping professions. Our Applied Research Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Project bridges the gap between academic inquiry and real-world application with an applied research project. This allows you the opportunity to connect with students who can work with you in a project to suit your organization’s needs. Highlights: We will work with you to help identify suitable projects. Under supervision of a faculty member, students present a viable, evidence-based, practical response to an identified organizational need. Students work in small groups to conduct research, complete the research project work, and present their work and/or recommendations to you and/or your organization. Students divide their time between course curriculum and the applied research project for a total of 45 hours (3 hours/week for 15 weeks) in the fall or winter terms. This is an unpaid experiential learning opportunity. Our students can: Provide your organization with innovative solutions and fresh perspectives on community-centered challenges. Create surveys for research. Participate in data analysis and collating information. Perform a literature review or needs analysis. Develop community engagement strategies. Assess workplace processes and practices and develop recommendations.

Partner with our students as they apply their disciplinary knowledge to address needs or challenges identified by your organization through a project, event, or activity. This collaboration provides your organization with innovative solutions and support while enriching the students’ education with practical experience. Service learning is augmented with 30-hours of classroom seminar time. Highlights: We will work with you to help identify suitable projects. Students spend 45 hours meeting needs identified by your organization through a project, event, or activity. Two options: May-June (45 hours) OR May-August (45 hours) Service learning opportunities are offered to individual students or student groups. Students have supervising faculty to provide support, guidance, and opportunities for critical reflection throughout this experience. This is an unpaid experiential learning opportunity. Our students can: Provide your organization with innovative solutions and fresh perspectives on community-centered challenges. Create and/or participate in fundraising initiatives. Develop and facilitate employee training and community workshops. Develop community engagement strategies. Develop consumer or client information material. Assess workplace processes and practices and develop recommendations.
