Learning Partial Differential Equations with fMRI Data

In this project, we apply an appropriate data-driven method to derive the potential partial differential equation model hidden in an fMRI dataset collected by Visconti di Oleggio Castello, Matteo et al. (2020). This dataset records the responses of 25 subjects who watched part of the feature film "The Grand Budapest Hotel" by Wes Anderson.

Genetic Diversity in Franklin’s Ground Squirrels

The project aims to characterize mitochondrial genetic diversity in historical and contemporary individuals of Franklin’s ground squirrels. Currently this species is listed as “data deficient” in the province of Alberta, meaning that there is not enough information to determine if it is declining and in need of protections. Genetic information, coupled with other information from field surveys and community observations, can help to fill this information gap and help guide management decisions.

How to identify and respond to racism: An environmental scan of existing resources

Immigrants may find it challenging to tell whether they have experienced discrimination based on their race or ethno-culture. Based on past working experience, and conversation with several staff from community agencies serving immigrants, Lun and McKenzie propose to work on a project in this area. This project aims to search and document existing materials (e.g., manual, brochure, video) regarding how to identify and respond to racism experienced by immigrants in Canada. At the end of this project, we will have a list of available resources, which will be shared with community agencies in Edmonton. Besides, we will also identify the gaps in supporting immigrants to deal with situations and conversations when they experience racism.

The Caregivers

The proposed scholarly activity is the development of exploratory research into systems within art and academia and how they interact with the intersections of being a caregiver/mother, artist, and academic within a Canadian context. I will gather research on this topic via a course of interviews with practicing artist-academic-mothers and collecting existing published research on related themes.

Use of 360 LIDAR and the ROS Operating System in a Robotics Laboratory Setting

Providing students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills is desired but often limited within a single Robotics course. In addition, some advanced algorithms (such as SLAM - simultaneous location and mapping) might not fit within the contents of an entry level course however the topics can still provide great teaching value in terms of engagement and interest. The question becomes how to incorporate difficult topics without overwhelming students. The goal of this project is to design and develop a modular framework for using the Robotic Operating System (ROS) and a 360 LIDAR for teaching robotic localization within the computer science curriculum.

The evolution of undergraduate economics education and the use of flipped classroom pedagogy.

The project is about the evolution of undergraduate economics teaching and the use of flipped classroom pedagogy. As the title states, the project has two parts. One is the study of the evolution of undergraduate economics, from the origin of the discipline of economics to the modern content and pedagogy. This needs an extensive study of the review of literature from the inception of the discipline of economics to modern-day economics. The other is to evaluate the flipped classroom technique on its successes, failures, and adaptations. We also plan to figure out how modern artificial intelligence (Chat GPT, Viso Suite Platform, Jupyter Notebooks, Google Cloud AI Platform, Azure Machine Learning Studio, Infosys Nia, Salesforce Einstein, etc.) and pedagogical software (blackboard, moodle, etc.) can affect the flipped classroom pedagogy. Our particular interests are twofold: from students' perspectives and from learning effectiveness.

Words and War: One War, Four Languages, Numerous Perspectives Phase 2

The war in Ukraine has generated news and media stories that include various forms of 'hate speech' about Ukraine. This research study examines how four languages (Ukrainian, Russian, French, and English) use words that are derogatory and negative when reporting on the war. Dr. Lucille Mazo, MacEwan University, and Dr. Yuliya Krylova-Grek, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla, are collaborating on this international project. Dr. Mazo is examining words in France (French) and Canada (English) countries. Dr. Krylova-Grek is examining words in Ukraine (Ukrainian) and Russia (Russian) countries. News and media sites in all four countries will be analyzed for the presence, meaning, and frequency of words that indicate/suggest a form of 'hate speech'. After analysis of these words, the results will be compared for themes, commonalities, similarities, and dissimilarities within the four languages. The results are expected to be presented to both academic and community groups.

Level UP- MacEwan- Data sets creation - Phase 10

We would like students to help us with creating content that is aligned with our vision, mission, and sector. We will ensure the student has a clear understanding of what these elements are for our organization. The project is a project that is developing a web-based application to generate synthetic datasets for students. The application is to create datasets either based on tools actual data provided by the user, or the user can create their own customized data sets. The application creates a unique dataset for each studentinstructor, allows the isntructor to create queries, and then marks the students' submissions. The project is composed of three phases.

Franklin's Ground Squirrel DNA project Phase 2

The goal of this project is to develop genetic resources for Franklin’s ground squirrels. Franklin’s ground squirrels are a native species in Alberta. While not currently listed under the Species At Risk Act (SARA) observational evidence from naturalists indicates that this species has experienced recent declines in abundance. Working collaboration with Dr. Jessica Haines who will be leading field work to assess the current distribution of the species in the province, we will be developing a new set of genetic markers that can help estimate current genetic diversity as well as past population sizes.

Level UP - MacEwan - Integrating Finance game into Web-Application - Phase 4

We would like to invite a team of students to work on integrating an application into a website that hosts several educational tools. The application is a Finance simulation game, where a student plays the role of an accountant. The application is already done, but it needs to be integrated into the main database of the other applications that are already developed. Students will be required to work with a team who is working on the other applications. They are going to be mentored by experts and lots of support is going to be offered to them. This is the second phase of the project. At this stage, students are to work on the professor's side and integrate it into the professor's dashboard and grade book. Professors should be able to add the game to their assignments.
